While it is always a positive to see the Chief Executive visit the state, given the Obama regime’s hostility to resource development had a lot of us worried. So far, there are no new National Monuments (yet).

In a time of tight budgets, it is always gratifying when a University Chancellor self-identifies as a world-class PC idiot and volunteers his University for a 40 – 50% budget cut. Such was the case last month as UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers ordered the removal of the Mississippi state flag from a display of all 50 state flags.

It took the left a week or so to crank up the outrage machine to a fever pitch following the church shooting in South Carolina last week. Target this time around, the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, otherwise known as the Stars and Bars or the Confederate Flag. Completely forgotten have been both the dead and wounded.

The running gag in the movie Up was someone shouting “squirrel” and the dogs instantly dropping what they were doing and running off in chasing it.   Budget wars in recent weeks has put Alaska is in much the same position, chasing squirrels while ignoring the single most important task of increasing flow through the pipeline.

One of the really ugly pathologies falling out of the welfare state is the destruction of civilized behavior by those who have been on the public dole for generations. Here in the US, it is most apparent in the primarily black inner cities where only 17% of children are raised by two parent families.

Representative Harriet Drummond (D, ANC) introduced legislation last week to allow physician assisted suicide here in Alaska. She calls it Death with Dignity and dresses it up in all the usual leftist claptrap about choice.

I always find it interesting to look at the foundation documents justifying any expansion of state power, authority and welfare. The Healthy Alaska Plan for Medicaid makes some very interesting reading and raises many questions.

The Walker administration Friday, February 6 floated their first justification for Medicaid expansion here in Alaska. The announcement was accompanied by a pair of documents, one by a consultant and one by the State. You can find the documents here. http://dhss.alaska.gov/HealthyAlaska/Documents/Evergreen_Medicaid_Expans...

With his action over the weekend on ANWR, President Obama announced that he has morphed from lame duck into troll, with Alaska as his first target. My experience with trolls is that he wants the appropriate thundering response from Alaskans and its elected leadership, while he moves on to the next target.

The Wiki defines an Internet Troll as:

Unlike bureaucracy the capital formation process necessary to both private and public endeavor is similar to walking a tightrope with no net. There is only ruin if the endeavor is not successful.

What has Obama’s efforts to open the borders and invite in as many non-Americans into this nation done? It has invited third world plagues back into the US to play.

Regulatory capture has taken place right now, today when a group of extremely wealthy Americans and their tax exempt foundations end up controlling a government agency – in this case, the EPA.

Regulatory capture takes place when the government regulator / taxation agency or authority becomes part of the industry it is charged with regulating, advancing the interests of the industry rather than the interests of the citizenry at large. The regulator acts as a monopoly owner of the industry which in turn owns and controls it and its actions.

We hoped here in Anchorage was that the Alaska Dispatch would improve the quality of their climate change hysteria. Sadly the new operation is a lot like the old one, with most recently a breathless piece about ocean acidification (caused once again by manmade CO2 emissions) and its impact on Alaska communities.

If any of us needed another reminder that the US Senate is being led by a bunch of clueless demagogues comes a failed vote to overturn the SCOTUS Hobby Lobby opinion.

The Center for Immigration Studies released a report on immigration since the year 2000 late this week. The basic conclusions of the report, created using government supplied data, finds that over the last 14 years, there has been no increase in the number of Native Americans holding a job while 5.7 million immigrants hold new jobs over that period.

A pair of stories hit the Internet tubes this week about immigration. Individually, each would be sufficiently infuriating. Taken together, they paint an awful picture of a completely out of control administration, a cynical attempt to create new democrat voters, and an equally spineless congress.

The state's Citizens Advisory Commission on Federal Areas (CACFA) will meet in Fairbanks June 6 - 7, 2014. The public is welcome to attend this meeting or listen in, as well as provide public comment, online. The agenda for the June 6 - 7th meeting, plus meeting materials are available for public reviewing at: dnr.alaska.gov/commis/cacfa

Losing Ground on Federal Lands, If you are an Alaskan living in a Non-subsistence Area.

Not only does the implementation of Federal laws in Alaska give a priority to fish & game to Alaskan residents with a rural zip code it also gives a priority for motorized access on the +60% of federally owned lands in the state.

The party of slavery; the party of Jim Crow; the party of the inner city political machine over the last two centuries is back at it again, this time demanding that the Washington Redskins, a professional football team known by that name since 1937 change its name, as the current one is now offensive to Native Americans.

The most important thing about this fight is what the EPA is not publicly saying. The entire anti-Pebble action is an attempt by the EPA to subvert existing public law so as to set itself up as the sole regulator of watersheds nationwide, usurping statutory authority given the Army Corps of Engineers and the states.

What we are seeing out of the VA, is essentially a demonstration of a single payer medical system for veterans, something that has been going on for years inside the British Health Service, Canada’s Medicare, and to a lesser extent here in the US under Medicaid and Medicare. It is the future of all of us under ObamaCare.

Recent allegations of poor medical treatment leading to many deaths of veterans by the Veterans Administration hospital system and subsequent cover-up of bureaucratic malfeasance has generated a lot of public sturm und drang demanding who did what to whom, when, where and why.

Just in time to turn out Bush Alaska in large numbers to vote for Mark Begich and Byron Mallott, the Obama regime’s Department of the Interior is considering seizing parcels of tribal land across Alaska, putting it into federal trust, and turning those lands and residents into Indian Country – essentially reservations.

The left has suggested that we kill the electoral college for electing our President. A few states have started a compact to ignore the election results in their state if the national popular vote favors another candidate. Either change would encourage fraud in presidential elections. I offer an amendment that strengthens the electoral vote and discourages fraud.

The electoral college

Our mode of electing the President of the United States is a bit strange. Many people believe the Electoral College is an obsolete part of the Constitution. They think we would be better off eliminating it and determining the winner based on the nationwide popular vote.

People send me stuff. I got a note from a correspondent a couple days ago who sent along a photo of a sales slip for a fishing pole from Cabella’s. The sales slip had a $2 tax on a $20 fishing pole. Cabella’s was wrong blaming it on ObamaCare. They were correct in pointing out the existence of the tax.  However they were a mere 60 years late complaining about it.

A fundamental structural change in our inter-governmental system to better balance the powers of the states and the federal government and resolve disagreements with methods short of violence.

An alternate way to resolve constitutional disputes.

In Part 15, I suggested a way for states to assert constitutional violations in a manner that does not radically change our governmental structure. In the current column, I will suggest a way for the states to challenge the constitutionally of federal statutes by creating a new inter-state body.

Mark Begich and his democrat majority in the US Senate have destroyed millions of jobs in the last 5 years.  Why allow him to continue?

One of the excuses given by Mark Begich for voting for ObamaCare is that it was supposed to increase jobs here in Alaska and nationwide. The excuse for a federal takeover of one-seventh of the national economy was to improve job opportunity for all Americans. What does this say about the economic acumen of our Boy Senator? Not much.

We are well on the way to a place where the cure (militarized law enforcement and erosion on fundamental constitutional rights) is worse than the disease (drug use), which means we conservatives made a huge mistake supporting this.  The marijuana legalization initiative on the August ballot is a way to start  doing something about it.

A couple weeks ago the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana turned in over 45,000 signatures to put a ballot initiative on the August primary election ballot. Their intent is to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana at the state level like we currently do tobacco and alcohol. http://regulatemarijuanainalaska.org/

Our Congress has gotten so sloppy about keeping within the bounds they were assigned by the Constitution, that it is time to clarify both their duties and those of the Supreme Court.

Are you serious? Are you serious?”

I have had occasion to cringe when I hear sub-literate answers many US senators and representatives give when they’re asked “what is the constitutional justification for a law?”
