In his call for a Special Session of the legislature to discuss a natural gas pipeline project, Governor Bill Walker surprised all the players by proposing a reserves gas tax on oil and natural gas. Such a tax would slam leaseholders on the Alaska North Slope for not bringing projects online.

Incumbent US Senator Lisa Murkowski (R, AK ) is up for reelection next year. Given the absolute mess that the US Senate has turned into, perhaps it is time to explore a few observations and rumors about the upcoming campaign.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing time after time and expecting different results. We see that once again with Senator Bill Wielechowski’s (D, IBEW) op-ed over the weekend decrying senate budget cuts as somehow being against Alaskan values.

One of the recent tricks by democrats in recent elections has been to split conservative votes by funding and backing libertarian candidates in closely contested elections.

Laurie Hummel is married to an Alaska Army National Guard Colonel. You don’t get to that rank in what appears to be a dysfunctional, sick outfit without seeing, hearing and knowing things and either looking the other way or playing along. So Laurie, baby: What did you know? When did you know about it? And what did you do about it when you found out?

Well, well, well. Did I call it for Laurie Hummel or not with last week’s column?

Democrat candidate Bill Walker had himself a most interesting week this last one. Not only did he take mutually exclusive positions on budget cutting, but he covered up his own campaign incompetence with some good old Messenger Shooting.

First the budget festivities.

Democrats found themselves quite a candidate to run for House District 13 in East Anchorage. Laurie Hummel is a 30-year Army Colonel who is painting herself as the very picture of fiscal restraint. She claims to be running because the last Legislature and LeDoux in particular simply spent too much money.

Interesting that state and national democrats have determined that conducting a war on mining via campaign ads, particularly targeting the proposed Pebble Mine is their ticket to electoral success this year.

Internal polling for the Mother Ship that is the Mark Begich for US Senate campaign must be showing things that are worrisome to our Boy Senator, as they ran a vicious and untrue ad blasting away at his Republican opponent Dan Sullivan last weekend.

A week ago, the EPA released their so-called Clean Power Plan Rule, a 645 page monstrosity guaranteed to make electricity more expensive, less reliable, and ensure more of our hard-earned tax dollars go to friends and cronies of this regime all in the name of curbing the ravages of carbon pollution.

In committee, Mark Begich votes against allowing firearms in Post Office buildings then turns right around and votes to allow them in USPS parking lots, via which he wraps himself in the flag, and claims to be a great supporter of the Second Amendment.  If so, why are Post Offices still a free fire zone for bad guys?

When Interior can cancel a proposed land swap to allow a road through a National Wildlife Refuge that few ever visit via the excuse of some undetermined threat to nesting birds while actively killing banded owls in the Pacific Northwest and writing rules to allow wind farms to kill hundreds of thousands of birds over the next 30 years, we have the very definition of insanity.

The rest of the nation has been treated to a week's worth of abuse we Alaskans see on a regular basis.

The Shutdown Wars being conducted by the Obama White House via its Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has introduced the rest of the nation to the endemic thuggery and viciousness we Alaskans have come to know and expect from National Park Service (NPS) and its employees over the years.

Why is Joe Miller, a self-professed staunch defender of liberty, a TEA Party favorite, and someone who has reported to be in the middle of the recent internal wars within the Alaska Republican Party for the last three years a bad idea for Alaska? Answer?

Joe Miller announced setting up an exploratory committee for a possible run for US Senate in 2014 against Mark Begich. While glorious news to the Millerites and Paulians he has ingratiated himself with over the last couple years, I am skeptical that this is anything but bad news for the rest of Alaska.
