Alaska DNR released its determination on the water reservation requests for the Chuitna carefully crafted to obstruct the construction and operation of PacRim’s proposed coal mine. The determination was signed on October 6, 2015 and can be found at the following links. The short story is that DNR tossed the two most restrictive reservations while granting the least restrictive.

The State Department of Natural Resources held a hearing last Friday on the water reservation filed to obstruct PacRim’s construction of a coal mine west of Tyonek.  At the hearing were all the usual anti-development suspects including Trustees for Alaska, Cook Inletkeeper and the Chuitna Citizens Coalition.

When we listen to arguments about threats to salmon runs in the Chuitna by the proposed coal mine, it is important to know how many fish we are actually talking about.  In this case, not many.  Yet the opponents propose to kill off hundreds of high paying, long term jobs anyway.

The Chuitna Citizens Coalition is taking their fight against a proposed strip mine across Cook Inlet from Anchorage to court in an attempt to grant themselves exclusive water rights in the region.
