Incumbent US Senator Lisa Murkowski (R, AK ) is up for reelection next year. Given the absolute mess that the US Senate has turned into, perhaps it is time to explore a few observations and rumors about the upcoming campaign.

If any of us needed another reminder that the US Senate is being led by a bunch of clueless demagogues comes a failed vote to overturn the SCOTUS Hobby Lobby opinion.

The electoral juggernaut that is the Reelect Mark Begich hit a patch of rough water over the last several weeks; most of it due to democrats acting like democrats.

Senator David Vitter (R, LA) introduced S.2156, the Regulatory Fairness act of 2014 in congress last month. The legislation is an attempt to keep the EPA from preemptively or retroactively vetoing a permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act.  Lisa is supporting the legislation.  Mark claims not to know about it.

The EPA assessment of the impact of the proposed Pebble mine in 2011 claimed to address local concern about the project, which the EPA simply couldn’t ignore. As it turns out, that was all a big lie. The results were pre-ordained and anti-mining groups worked closely with the EPA well before the assessment process was announced.

The democrat majority in the US Senate last week decided that an extension of unemployment benefits was more important than job creation.  With 92 million Americans permanently out of the work force, this seems more of an exercise in manufacturing new democrat voters than taking care of people in need.

Tuesday this week, the democrat majority in the US Senate joined by six Republicans voted to stop debate on legislation to spend another $6 billion to extend unemployment benefits.

When Mark Begich promises to never take your guns, that promise holds as much water as his promise to let you keep your health care insurance.  None.

Yet another sin tax proposed.  The last one didn't work.  Why do it again?

The new prohibitionists are back with yet another bite of the apple, with a tax increase on alcohol on the MatSu ballot tomorrow. All the usual suspects are out in force supporting yet another regressive tax on people who pose no problem to the body politic.

Why is Joe Miller, a self-professed staunch defender of liberty, a TEA Party favorite, and someone who has reported to be in the middle of the recent internal wars within the Alaska Republican Party for the last three years a bad idea for Alaska? Answer?

Joe Miller announced setting up an exploratory committee for a possible run for US Senate in 2014 against Mark Begich. While glorious news to the Millerites and Paulians he has ingratiated himself with over the last couple years, I am skeptical that this is anything but bad news for the rest of Alaska.

Well, true colors don't fade for long. Lisa Murkowski, one of Alaska's two senators, seemed capable of grasping the implications of the Blunt Admendment last week when she enjoyed local press coverage of her vote in support of it.
