In his call for a Special Session of the legislature to discuss a natural gas pipeline project, Governor Bill Walker surprised all the players by proposing a reserves gas tax on oil and natural gas. Such a tax would slam leaseholders on the Alaska North Slope for not bringing projects online.

Looks like Governor Bill Walker is going to do his best impersonation of Tony Knowles by allowing the Department of the Interior to create Indian Country here in Alaska. The vehicle appears to be response to a 2013 Parnell lawsuit against tribal trust lands.

While the rest of the state is out chasing salmon and filling freezers, former Backbone member Bill Walker is busily “nationalizing” natural gas utilities here in Alaska, reversing a decades old move to privatization that has all but solved recent Railbelt natural gas shortages.

Last week a Muslim immigrant shot up a military recruiting station and Reservist base in Chattanooga, TN, killing five active duty military. The now deceased jihadi had gloried in the discomfort of others as he attended public schools and college. He eventually embraced his inner demons and decided his way into Heaven was to murder his neighbors.

Question: What happens when the Governor decides he really wants to be Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G)? Answer: He starts recommending “cost effective” wildlife control techniques to his appointees.

The first slice of Walker proposed budget cutting goes after the elderly, corrections and state employees as early targets. The budget proposes cutting some 250 jobs (329 total positions), and cuts some $240 million out of a $3.5 billion budget deficit, or a whopping 7% of the deficit. whoopee.

Governor Bill Walker paints himself as a Wally Hickel acolyte, doing everything possible to bring Alaska as the Owner State into being. In this, the Owner State is defined with Alaska and in turn, all Alaskans collectively owning all resources of the state. This worldview defines Walker’s actions and the actions of the Backbone group he represents.

Governor Bill Walker issued an administrative order Friday, December 26, 2014 directing all state agencies to stop non-obligated spending on the following six projects: the Ambler Road, Juneau Access Road, Watana Dam, Kodiak Launch Project, Knik Arm Crossing, and the Alaska Stand-Alone Pipeline Project.

One of the refrains we hear from the Walker-ites and on the talk shows these days is that the fiscal crunch puts “everything on the table.” I would submit that everything is most certainly not on the table, as decisions by the new Walker administration will be driven by their worldview and prejudices just like those before they came into town.

With the crash in the per barrel price of oil to the $60/bbl range, we here in Alaska are faced with the latest round of fiscal crises. That level is about half the per barrel forecast that former Governor Parnell’s budget was based upon.

When we elect a lawyer as governor and they bring their fellow lawyers into the new government, one would logically question whose interests are being pursued? Those of the people of Alaska or those of the law firms employing those lawyers? This is the very essence of crony capitalism.

Unlike bureaucracy the capital formation process necessary to both private and public endeavor is similar to walking a tightrope with no net. There is only ruin if the endeavor is not successful.

Laurie Hummel is married to an Alaska Army National Guard Colonel. You don’t get to that rank in what appears to be a dysfunctional, sick outfit without seeing, hearing and knowing things and either looking the other way or playing along. So Laurie, baby: What did you know? When did you know about it? And what did you do about it when you found out?

Well, well, well. Did I call it for Laurie Hummel or not with last week’s column?

Democrat candidate Bill Walker had himself a most interesting week this last one. Not only did he take mutually exclusive positions on budget cutting, but he covered up his own campaign incompetence with some good old Messenger Shooting.

So what happens when the second largest political party in the state pointedly disenfranchises some 52,000 of its primary voters for governor and 56,000 voters for LtGov? Surprisingly enough, we get a great round of applause, press conferences, smiling faces, positive media coverage, and happy union leaders.

Interesting that state and national democrats have determined that conducting a war on mining via campaign ads, particularly targeting the proposed Pebble Mine is their ticket to electoral success this year.

The 17th amendment removed an important power of the states in the interest of reducing corruption. Moving that power back to the states while creating a hybrid system that also curtails corruption is the goal of this new amendment.

As ObamaCare forces hundreds of thousands onto Medicaid, it also makes their property subject for liens and repayment in full.  Is this a conscious assault on property rights by the left?

As the Hounds of Hades come after Governor Parnell over his very reasonable refusal to accept yet another Obama administration and democrat “trust me” to reimburse the state for three years should he agree to expand Medicaid, I start wondering why the orchestrated campaign is being waged here in Alaska.
