The Church of the Far Left has its Eye on Bigger Things

I have a problem. I (and since I am married and must be at fault), am late to arrive guy. Whether it’s the force of nature, forgotten pie, missing cell phone, or poor planning, I am often late to arrive for events. I always say I’ll try to do better, but, invariably, I’m right in the strike zone of being tardy.

So given that, it should come as no surprise, that I am late to arrive at the conclusion that many a conservative has known for quite some time. The easy target of the right, Planned Parenthood, is more than the militant defender of abortion. It’s more than the fake victim of the Komen Foundation's yanked and un-yanked funding. It’s more than a place for kids to get condoms. It appears, it is also the missionaries and foot soldiers to bring about change embraced by the left. And while my own jury is out on One Anchorage, its presence does push me towards opposing the measure.

But Dave, cry the minions of the left, you and your conservative ilk have hated PP (Planned Parenthood), gays, trans-genders, lesbians (of which I am a practicing member), poor, blah blah blah. Hate is the word that’s used, and so I’ll not waste my time arguing it, but it is inaccurate. The left believes that the right is intolerant, as opposed to being passionately indifferent. If we conservatives were ever to win the silly “we don’t hate” debate, but were finally able to claim the “we could care less” high ground, the assumptions made by One Anchorage and other similar actions would be the stuff of text books, and not common conversation. But this is not about One Anchorage. Not today.

Today, this is about an organization which has members that rend garments, gnash teeth, and burn pink ribbons, all because their faith is being  attacked. The faith has a god (Margaret Sanger), dogma (if we live in a state where you can’t, we’ll fly you to where you can), and a congregation that will chip in cash if they must, but prefer everyone does too. But like other organized faith, it must grow or become stagnate, and that’s where One Anchorage comes in.

PP is a non-profit, so very close to the edge, as their supports would have you believe, that the loss of a million dollars annually put cancer screenings at risk. And so what does this group do in an effort to make sure no one is turned away from a much needed screening? Why, they use their time, treasure, and resources to be a major contributor to One Anchorage. Indeed, in studio, during my daily show, Clover Simon read from somewhere the Planned Parenthood mission statement. Well, at least part of it, as it is quite lengthy. So, to save my air time and lengthen my column, I went to the website plannedpartenthood.org, and copied these mission items:

  • To provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings which preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual
  • To advocate public policies which guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services
  • To provide educational programs which enhance understanding of individual and societal implications of human sexuality
  • To promote research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care and encourage understanding of their inherent bioethical, behavioral, and social implications

In studio, Ms. Simon confirmed that no one is denied access to PP under current laws, nor does the status quo impede any of the other mission goals of PP, but they view their role as being an advocate for groups such as the LGBT population of Anchorage because they need a voice. So, I wonder, which statement is true?

1. The funding of Planned Parenthood, and the goals of providing health services is critical, and all efforts must be done to ensure these funds are used to the maximum benefit of our mission statement

-or-

2. We need to set up a PAC, raise a bunch of cash, and remind our flock that we are everywhere, and they better show up when we need them.

I’m quite sure in the next few weeks, we’ll all be told how horrible a place Anchorage is to folks who are different, and somehow it’s the fault of conservatives. But the next time Planned Parenthood sings the blues about poor women dying because they didn’t have the funds to save them, ask them what they did with the cash they gave to One Anchorage. I know I will.
